The Desired Baby Comes with Clomid
Those who had troubles with having a baby have probably heard about Clomid. This is the most known and popular fertility drug and not in vain because it does what people expect it to do.
Clomid is the brand name for clomiphane citrate. This drug is sold under its own name, Clomid or Serophene. All of them work in the same way.
About 25% of ladies’ infertility is connected to ovulation problems and Clomid is the one that helps to jumpstart the ovulation work in the regular and permanent way. Eighty percent of patients who take the drug notice that the process goes as it should and half of them get pregnant within first six cycles.
Before taking Clomid the patient should be diagnosed well. The doctor should find out what case of infertility is taking place. If there is a problem with fallopian tubes, Clomid will not help, because even perfect work of ovaries does not let the egg and the spem to meet without the main “highway” for them – the tubes. At the same time many women have irregular or anovulary cycles, these are the cases when Clomid works best and can be tried before any other fertility drugs. This medicine also can be taken in the treatment of polycystic ovarian syndrome related infertility or when a couple wants to try less expensive treatment before they go to something more serious like IVF.
Clomid comes in 50 mg tablets and knowing the patient’s condition the doctor will explain how to use the drug in the right way. It is usually recommended to use Clomid for five days: either days 3 through 7 of the cycle or 5 through 9. Even if the doctor tells a little different schedule the patient should not be worried, because the studies have shown that ovulation and pregnancy comes regardless whether Clomid was started on day two, three, four or five. Sometimes the doctor might increase the dose, but it is all right too.
The side effects of the drug are not very bad. Sometimes the patient can have hot flashes, breast tenderness, mood swings or nausea, the same symptoms as a pregnant woman has. The side effects go away as soon as Clomid is stopped.
If the dose is too high, one of the main side-effects will be the decreased amount of cervical mucus or its quality which is important for conception. Another problem is that the lining of the uterus becomes thinner and the implantation of the embryo will be more difficult.
There is one more known side-effect. Any fertility drug that stimulates ovulation might result in twins. The patient’s chance with Clomid to have multiples increases to 10%.
