Prostate Treatment Avodart

January 22nd, 2010

Avodart is a medication designed for men. It is meant to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia in men with an enlarged prostate. As many other drugs of the same nature, Avodart stops the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone which is involved in the development of the hyperplasia. The medicine improves urinary flow and may lower the need for a prostate surgery later on. However, some side-effects make the drug unattractive to some patients.

Avodart should not be taken by women and children, pregnant women should not even touch the pills due to a potential risk of a specific birth defect because the particles might be absorbed through skin. The patients should not donate blood while taking this drug and at least for six months after they stop taking it.

As any prescription medicine, Avodart should be taken exactly as instructed by a doctor: the dose should not be exceeded or taken in smaller amounts. It can be taken with or without food, but should be washed down with a full glass of water. The medicine comes in capsules and it is necessary to take them as a whole: the patient is strongly advised not to chew, crush or open the capsules.

The patient should not stop taking Avodart without talking to a doctor: it has a long lasting effect and it does not improve the condition right away. Sometimes it takes up to 6 months for the medicine to start working. In the course of the treatment the prostate will have to be checked regularly, because it is necessary to know if Avodart brings any positive results.

The studies held primarily by the manufacturer of the medicine showed that it had some side-effects. Taking Avodart can possibly result in impotence, decreased libido (sex drive), swelling or tenderness of the breast, or decreased amount of semen released during sex. If a person has allergic reaction to the ingredients such as swelling, hives, or difficulty breathing, he should get emergency medical help.

Some medications that are meant to work with the prostate affect hair loss because they stop testosterone from conversion into dihydrotestosterone. Avodart has gone through some studies and it has been proven that it works as well as Proscar or Finasteride: it stops hair loss and restores hair thickness. So far Avodart has not been manufactured as a hair loss treatment and further studies will show if the hair loss treatment should contain smaller dosage of the drug or not.
