Healthy Life-Style
There is not need in statistics to see that many deaths in America could be prevented if people led a healthy life-style. Such problems as lung cancer, heart disease, strokes, diabetes and others originate in bad habits which could be simply avoided. So, if a person wants to be healthy, there are three things to do: eat right, avoid bad habits and stay physically active.
In order to live and be active a person has to eat good healthy food in the right amounts. Such diseases as diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and cholesterol level can be prevented or controlled by right eating. Healthy diet means that a person should consume good amounts of calcium, iron and various vitamins. Almost any diet shows that fresh vegetables and fruits are the basis for healthy life. Among them dark-green leafy vegetables, deep-yellow and orange fruits and vegetables and all kinds of berries are the best.
Protein is good for overall health and the strength of hair and nails in particular. Healthy diet should include lean meat, poultry, fish and low-fat dairy products for good supply of protein, omega fatty-3 acids, and B vitamins.
Weight should be kept under control; therefore a person should avoid eating too much sugar, bread products and other things high in carbohydrates. If it is extremely hard to keep oneself away from an extra cookie, the person should think of an extra lap while jogging or create some additional physical activity to burn the calories from the cookie. While considering carbohydrates, it is better to turn to whole grains (wheat, rice, corn, oat, and barley), beans, whole grain breads and cereals.
Physical activity does not only keep the body in shape, but it prevents such diseases as osteoporosis, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, mental disorders, and obesity. Any kind of exercise is good as long as it brings joy: while one person enjoys vigorous aerobics moves, the other one gets more pleasure from a long walk. It is good to experiment and try different kinds of activities.
An important factor about exercise is that it should be consistent. The person should find time to do some exercise five days a week for at least 30 minutes. It is good to start slowly and increase the intensity, but the activity should be kept without long breaks because all the gain can be quickly lost. Many people benefit from having a partner for the exercises.
And finally, in order to be healthy a person should stay away from bad habits. Abusing alcohol and illegal drugs might cause mental and personal problems. It can lead to road accidents if a person is under the influence while driving or to injuries at work, especially if the job involves operating some kind of machinery. Alcohol and drugs can cause problems with family, friends and work. They might lead to various diseases: drugs cause heart and breathing problems, alcohol ruins liver and heart, might lead to mouth cancer.
Smoking is a great problem of mankind which leads to more major diseases than any other habit. It is the source of many cancers: lung, mouth, bladder, throat and others; it leads to strokes, heart and lung diseases. It is wonderful if the person never smoked, but even if he or she did, it is never to late to quit!
