Different Ways to Relieve Pain

July 26th, 2009

Pain is not a bad reaction as many people think. It is a signal of the body that something is not right. If we did not feel pain, we could go through fire, jump from the second floor of a building, fight fearlessly, but how would we look after all the trials? Although there were no pain, the body would be torn up.

Pain stops people from damaging the body, it allows to predict some conditions before it is too late, it helps to find and heal the problem before it develops severely. For example, we go to a dentist with a toothache and the doctor will most likely save the tooth by putting in a filling. Pain in the muscles shows that there was too much work done and we stop to give the muscles a break.

However, there are some conditions when pain is unbearable or there is no need to tolerate it. For example, birth pain is really severe in some cases although there is nothing a woman can do to stop the pain, so she calls for anesthesiologist and receives a pain relief, which allows her to concentrate on the wonderful first moments with her newborn baby. In some cases the pain relief actually helps to give birth in the right way without bad results which otherwise would happen if the woman was panicking and screaming with pain.

The specialists consider several types of pain: physical injury pain, pain with disease origin and emotional pain. All of them have various cures, but the most common physical pain can be usually treated by pain relief medications. When a person enters a pharmacy, he or she finds a whole isle full in such drugs.

Acetaminophen and paracetamol are analgesics designed for treating mild and moderate pain. As a rule they are also used to reduce temperature in fever. They are less irritant for stomach than other over-the-counter drugs and safe for children. However, overdosing of them leads to liver problems.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are used for sports injuries, when muscles are stretched, pulled or hurt in other ways. They reduce pain connected to inflammation and can be handy in case of fever. An example of a medicine like this is well-known aspirin and ibuprofen. Some women use these pain relief drugs to calm down menstruation pain. Children should not take aspirin, because they might get Reye’s syndrome with causes brain and liver damage.

It is impossible to find a medicine which would help to cope with strong pain over-the-counter and a person should go to a doctor for it. After the source and level of pain as determined, the patient receives a prescription for a narcotic analgesic like codeine. It might be prescribed in a combination with other pain relief drugs to calm down tooth ache, period pain or migraine.

Many people use alternative ways to relieve pain too. Little children are usually taught to put ice on bruises or stretched muscles, because the cold help in this situation. Massage, heat, resting, and relaxation techniques can be used for treating pain as well.
