A Review of Propecia and Other Mens Health Products

February 2nd, 2009

Going bald is no fun, but today’s hair growth remedies can actually be quite effective at helping the situation. This is because of two chemicals that have been manufactured in the past decade or so: minoxidil and finasteride. Each one has been clinically proven to grow hair, but people should be aware of some important differences. These are evident in this review of Propecia and other men’s health products.

Propecia–Propecia uses finasteride, which you need a prescription for. Recently, a 5-year study was concluded which showed that 48% of men using Propecia had some hair regrowth, while 42% reported no additional loss of hair. Note that if you are a woman, Propecia is not for you, especially if you may get pregnant or are breastfeeding. Finasteride is known to cause abnormalities in the sex organs of baby boys.

In fact, sexual side effects are probably the main problem with Propecia. Some men experience sexual dysfunction such as impotence. There are even claims that these side effects are irreversible and permanent.

Provillus–This is one of the most popular hair growth remedies sold today. Provillus is available through the internet and you don’t need a prescription. It contains minoxodil, which studies have shown prevents hair loss while encouraging regrowth. The good news for women is that minoxidil is perfectly safe for them to use. There’s even a female version of Provillus which does very well.

There are absolutely no sexual side effects associated with minoxidil. It can make your scalp itchy though. For this reason, Provillus has added a moisturizing component to its topical solution (which contains the minoxidil). Provillus also comes with a vitamin supplement that increases the body’s ability to grow healthy hair. In essence, Provillus attacks hair loss from both the outside (the liquid solution) and the inside (the supplement).

Scalp Med–Scalp Med is very similar to Provillus. It contains minoxidil, a moisturizer, and vitamins. A female version is also available. But there is a considerable difference in price. Scalp Med costs $349.95 for a 6-month supply. Among Propecia and other men’s health products, this is the most expensive. For example, Provillus is only $199.95. I can’t see how this difference in price is justified by any difference in the products.

All of these hair growth remedies should be effective at stopping and reversing hair loss. However, many men are put off by the possibly permanent sexual problems caused by Propecia. Compared to Scalp Med, Provillus is a much better value. A 6-month supply works out to a little over $1 a day. There are no significant side effects and it’s been proven to work.

In conclusion, when it comes to Propecia and other men’s health products, Provillus gets my vote as the best hair loss product available.
